“Good news for local food movements. On November 17th the Senate voted in favor of incorporating into the federal food safety bill the Tester-Hagan Amendment, which would effectively advance food safety measures without putting unfair burdens on local, small-scale food producers. The Amendment would exempt small farmers, who earn less than $500,000 and sell directly to consumers within 275 miles, from some federal requirements. It would allow the FDA to override the exemption if a small grower is connected with an outbreak.”
