anti-aging creams DON’T WORK.

what’s with the new commercials showing women pinching their skin so we can watch it bounce? gross.

"There are no published medical studies showing they work."

"The ‘must-have’ ingredients of face creams and pills that claim to hold back the hands of time - have little or no effect, a study found."

"According to a new study conducted by Consumer Reports on nine drugstore to high end face serums, the effectiveness of even the most expansive brand was close to nothing."

the only way to improve your skin is to eat better, exercise, reduce stress, and be nice to it.

i don’t know why but

i love this so much… Patti Smith:

"I got my tray and slipped in my coins but the window wouldn’t open. I tried again without luck and then I noticed the price had gone up to sixty-five cents. I was disappointed, to say the least, when I heard a voice say, "Can I help?"

I turned around and it was Allen Ginsberg. We had never met but there was no mistaking the face of one of our great poets and activists. I looked into those intense dark eyes punctuated by his dark curly beard and just nodded. Allen added the extra dime and also stood me to a cup of coffee. I wordlessly followed him to his table, and then plowed into the sandwich.

Allen introduced himself. He was talking about Walt Whitman and I mentioned I was raised near Camden, where Whitman was buried, when he leaned forward and looked at me intently. “Are you a girl?” he asked.

"Yeah," I said. "Is that a problem?"

He just laughed. “I’m sorry, I took you for a very pretty boy.”

I got the picture immediately.

"Well, does this mean I return the sandwich?"

"No, enjoy it. It was my mistake."

He told me he was writing a long elegy for Jack Kerouac, who had recently passed away. “Three days after Rimbaud’s birthday,” I said. I shook his hand and we parted company.”

The universe is composed of subjects to be communed with, not objects to be exploited. Everything has its own voice. Thunder and lightning and stars and planets, flowers, birds, animals, trees—all these have voices, and they constitute a community of existence that is profoundly related. »Thomas Berry (via commondense)

it worked!!

Good news for local food movements. On November 17th the Senate voted in favor of incorporating into the federal food safety bill the Tester-Hagan Amendment, which would effectively advance food safety measures without putting unfair burdens on local, small-scale food producers. The Amendment would exempt small farmers, who earn less than $500,000 and sell directly to consumers within 275 miles, from some federal requirements. It would allow the FDA to override the exemption if a small grower is connected with an outbreak.”

"To complainers everywhere: Turn up the volume!"

"Happiness is not, of course, guaranteed even to those who are affluent, successful, and well loved. But that happiness is not the inevitable outcome of happy circumstances does not mean we can find it by journeying inward to revise our thoughts and feelings. The threats we face are real and can be vanquished only by shaking off self-absorption and taking action in the world. Build up the levees, get food to the hungry, find the cure, strengthen the ‘first responders’! We will not succeed at all these things, certainly not all at once, but—if I may end with my own personal secret of happiness—we can have a good time trying."

“Jump off the cliff and build your wings on the way down.”

INTERVIEWER
How important has your sense of optimism been to your career?

RAY BRADBURY
I don’t believe in optimism. I believe in optimal behavior. That’s a different thing. If you behave every day of your life to the top of your genetics, what can you do? Test it. Find out. You don’t know—you haven’t done it yet. You must live life at the top of your voice! At the top of your lungs shout and listen to the echoes. I learned a lesson years ago. I had some wonderful Swedish meatballs at my mother’s table with my dad and my brother and when I finished I pushed back from the table and said, God! That was beautiful. And my brother said, No, it was good. See the difference?

Action is hope. At the end of each day, when you’ve done your work, you lie there and think, Well, I’ll be damned, I did this today. It doesn’t matter how good it is, or how bad—you did it. At the end of the week you’ll have a certain amount of accumulation. At the end of a year, you look back and say, I’ll be damned, it’s been a good year.
